A message for freshers

Dear freshers!
The course of the Vocabulary of Modern English is highly effective, especially in our department.  Needless to say, it gave me an opportunity to brush up on my English and to enrich my vocabulary. I would like to let you in on the secrets of this course. Hope, you’ll grasp the importance of studying it.

To start with, although this course is not as easy as ABC, you should not be bookworms or have mental agility to study it. It is better to be eager beaver, be ready to cover a lot of ground and practice a lot. It is my firm conviction that practice makes perfect!
Secondly, you’ll get set texts for preparing to classes, so every day you ought to hit the books and sometimes learn new material by heart in order to pass an exam with flying colours. Moreover, attending classes is demanding, as if you’ll play hooky, you’ll fall behind with studying. Also be ready to meet the requirements of writing blogs. Take this task seriously, as it makes a useful contribution in memorizing your active vocabulary; don’t put it off until the last day.
In conclusion, it is obviously that you’ll study a lot, but at the end, I promise, you’ll enjoy the fruits of your hard work. Remember not just goof off on this subject; try to be keen on studying Vocabulary.

P.S: as for me, it was the most worth learning course and I must give a credit to my teacher Tetiana Oleksandrivna for my personal development, for her patience and persistence in studying our group.

A greener world

The Earth is considered to be one of the most beautiful planets in the universe. It is the only planet in the galaxy that has enough water to support life. Unfortunately, the planet is suffering due to many environmental problems that may affect people, societies, and ecosystems. These problems can result in major consequences for everyone’s daily life. The major environmental problems that are facing the world today are deforestation, global warming, destruction of the ozone layer, water pollution and acid rains.
Ecological problems have not bypassed Ukraine. We had such problems as cutting down oaks and as a result many wild animals are under treat, become endangered species.
Green policy all over the world tried to do their best in order to prevent the globe from environmental catastrophe. In Ukraine is launched a project called “Green Ukraine 2030”, everyone can suggest their own ways of saving our country. There are some of my ideas:
·        Switch to energy-saving eco light bulbs, because they emit less heat and last far longer
·        Recycle all recyclable waste
·        Remember that natural resources are not renewable, so cut down their using up
·        Switch off the main power of electrical appliances and lights when not in use
·        Use reusable shopping grocery bags for all staff purchases
·        Change cars into eco-friendly vehicles, use unleaded petrol
Remember, each of us is a resident of the Earth, so make our planet safe and clean!

A sound mind in a sound body

It happens. The busier you are, the harder it is to find time to take care of yourself, but it is vital to have a healthy lifestyle.

There are some tips to be in good shape.

1. Eat regular meals and be on a balanced diet
Avoid skipping meals and space your breakfast, lunch and evening meal out over the day. This will help control your appetite and blood glucose levels. Working a long shift? Don’t be starving have a quick snack.
2. Include some carbohydrates

The amount of carbohydrate you eat is important. Try to include those that are more slowly absorbed. Good choices include fruit and vegetables, pulses, starchy foods and some dairy foods.
3. Cut down on fat
Eat less fat, especially saturated fat. Unsaturated fats from sources like olive oil, sunflower oil, nuts are better for your heart. It is better to eat grill, steam or bake food instead of frying.
4. Try to eat five a day
Fruit and vegetables will give your body the vitamins, minerals and fibre it needs, and we should all aim to eat five or more portions a day in order to fill yourself up with nourishing meals.
5. Eat more pulses

Beans, peas and lentils are lower in fat, high in fibre, cheap to buy and packed with nutrients. They may help to control blood fats such as cholesterol.
6. Eat more fish
All types of fish are healthy provided they’re not coated in batter or fried, but oily fish such as salmon and trout are particularly good. They are rich in omega-3 which helps protect against heart disease.
7. Cut down on salt
Aim to eat 6g of salt or less a day. Too much salt can raise your blood pressure, which can increase your risk of Type 2 diabetes, stroke or heart attack. Around 75 per cent of our salt intake comes from processed foods – so try to cut back on prepared foods, and try flavouring your food with herbs and spices instead of salt.
Bear in mind, how you look depend only on you, so don’t be lazy bones – work out and have healthy eating habits.

Connections

David struck up a friendship with a girl he met on holiday. It was not a love at first sight. During school period their friendship grew and they became true friends.
David was a well-built with broad shoulders. He had a round face, unturned nose and jet-black hair. Being handsome boy, he also was a real character. He had a razor-sharp mind, a tendency to make snap decisions and gave the impression of being supremely confident. Lucy (a girl, who met David) was quite opposite. She had a little bit striking appearance. She had a slim figure and slender waist, a lovely complexion and ginger hair, and she’s always immaculately groomed. She was a real chatterbox, spontaneous, happy-go-lucky sort of person, but down-to-earth too. They were different, but it only has cemented their friendship.
Time passes and Lucy understood that she love David and decided to tell him about her sincere feelings. David having heard it neglected her and split up. For a few months Lucy found a boyfriend and wanted to marry him. Lucy invited David to her wedding. At that moment David understood he had mistaken as he fell in love with Lucy from the moment he met her. He knew that she was the love of his life. But it was too late to change something………too late.

P.Sbefore doing something – think about it in advance, because life is in you today, and you make your tomorrow.

Her story

Have you ever heard about MalalaYousafzai? If no, I'd like to explain why this girl attracts a whole world to her personality. Needless to say, Malala is the smallest peace activist in the world as now she is only 17.
She was born in Pakistan in 1997. Her childhood wasn’t peaceful as her country was at civil war. In 2009 Taliban authority started an operation of taking control of the valley, where Malala lived. Vast majority of residents, the military, volunteers and even civilian started to guard territory and tried to stand up for local council. However, all their peace talks, attempts to prevent war and to bring peace were in vain. In March of 2009 Taliban troops captured this small area. Moreover, it was regime of cruelty and violence, which forbade a lot of people rights and no one could live in peace. For instance, girls were banned to attend a school.
Malala is the only one girl who ensured diverse people in importance of female education.  She wrote a blog for the BBC, where she was telling details of living under occupation. In 2012 Malala was going home by bus, when a gunman boarded the bus, pulled out a weapon and fired three shots. One bullet hit her forehead, another went into her shoulder. She immediately was taken to the hospital. In 2013 she went out from the hospital, launched an educational campaign and published a book about her life. Her hopes of peace, desire to spread a female education caused a sensation in the world. Her personality had a huge effect on the entire mankind. As the result, for her efforts for struggling against the suppression of children she was given a funding and was awarded with Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.
To sum up, Angela Merkel called Malala "the identity of Pakistan". She is the youngest feminist who supports a peace campaign. We should know about deeds of such people and pray for them.

On the move

Dear Victoria,
How are you today? Is everything ok? I haven't written a letter to you for a long time. I’m so sorry for that and I really miss you. I’d like to tell you a story how I got around from Italy and became an immigrant.
To begin with, I remember everything even in small details. It was April of 1916 and I was just a little girl. I lived in a small stunning house on the outskirts of Rome with my parents and 3 brothers. This city was unspoilt and full of vibrant inhabitants till World War I, which was declared when I was 10.
People started migrate to better life in America. My parents, once or twice, were thinking about becoming refugees, as our government couldn’t provide us with asylum. In addition, the problem was with documents as my parents had only valid passports and needed to apply for a visa. After a few days of thinking about getting away from the war we decided to flee from it.
We took luggage with food and clothes, left our dwelling in remote and moved from my native country. Needless to say, we were sailing on a crowded ferry. We had to dock in the USA in 7 days. Having disembarked in New York we had a visit to an “eye man” in Ellis Island. At that moment, I had a desire to leave that place as a medical examination was the worst part of our journey.
Then we saw our new apartment in Lower East Side. The house was for 19 families and was overcrowded with different ethnic groups. Through a few days we got accustomed to this cultural diversity and have never stopped to live at peace with them. Moreover, we got acclimatized to new lifestyle, my relatives started working in order to make a living. I also had some chores, cooked a meal for a family, mopped floors and helped my mother looked after my smaller brother.
Frankly speaking, 30 years passed, we’ve integrated to a new society, but I still have a feel of nostalgia when I remember my childhood in Italy, all that familiar faces which I met in cobbled streets. Now, I have faith that in a near future I'll visit my native country. I hope to see you, my beloved friend.
Best wishes,
Rosalia

News travels fast

Education matters

Once Oscar Wilde said: “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” I subscribe to this theory because people live while they're studying. In modern society to get an education is not a problem.
Mostly everyone has an access to education and can get it not only in a childhood, but also can return to education at any age. However, nowadays we can notice substantial problems in educational system. Honestly think, nevertheless is it a primary education, higher or private education, most of the standards of education are from the old school. For instance, children are taught to be straight A students, so in pursuit of good marks they start have their nose in a bookburn the midnight oilcram and learn everything by heart. Other becomes a teacher's pet in order to get a place on a Honor Roll. Those who are not such eager beaversbookworms or just do not have unusual intelligence and mental agility start drop out of school or play truantIt is my firm conviction, modern educational institutions need significant changes. Moreover, such distinguished scholars as Sugata Mitra and Ken Robinson support the idea of new education system and suggest some rough ideas of breaking this problem.
First of all, Ken Robinson think that a progress in studying depends on curiosity of a child and individual studying. It seems as easy as ABC, if a person is interested in a subject, he cracks a book and hits the book, but if he just force to studying something he will get downgoof off and play hooky. So teachers should encourage curiosity of children, but an idea of individualized teaching is quite provoking. For example, in some subjects are things, which a student can't learn individually and as a result, he lose an opportunity to pass something with flying colours.
Secondly, Sugata Mitra's idea of self-organized learning environment, where children can educate themselves by using the Internet seems to be interesting, but it just for first glance. To illustrate, we couldn't rely on cutting-edge technologies, because some students still do not have an access to the web. Therefore, gifted children need real practice in order not to fall behind.
To summarize, I hope that leading educational authorities will grasp the importance of making new methods of education and do everything in order to change it successfully. Maybe in few years we will see a new generation of students, which will get a degree by using brand-new technologies. Also I'd like to add some ideas how to improve Ukrainian educational system, you can see them in a mindmap below.

***

November, 23, 5 p.m.
It is my last blog in this year. Being a bit devastated and depressed because of studying, I can’t suppress my positive feelings. There is one week to the end of this trimester, so I should prioritize things what I have to do. I’d like to begin with a brief summary of my achievements in studying Vocabulary of Modern English.
Firstly, if I compare this subject to other, it has a lot of benefits. I can say with a great honour, it teaches me a lot of new words and collocations, which I supposed will be useful in my future studying. However, I faced with some considerable difficulties in memorizing new words, to be honest, it was my main concern. It was uneasy to bear in mind so many new words, sometimes in my head was an utter chaos. At any rate, I thank for our teacher, because she took real efforts in teaching us. To simplify our studying she followed a rule: “Practice makes perfect”, so she helped us to memorize everything in our practical classes, by using creative activities. For instance, we played games, sang the songs, made dialogues or just created sentences.
Secondly, I found in myself some creative skills. Writing blogs was a classic example of incorporating our imagination and our new language. Moreover, for myself I created a new schedule of organization my work.
Finally, Vocabulary classes were worth learning. I feel ecstatic and jubilant of having such subject. It helped me not solely in improving my language, but also it provided me with enterprise and initiative. Furthermore, it fosters team spirit and collaboration with my classmates.

P.S: I’m looking forward to new classes of Vocabulary and hope they will be the same unforgettable:)

Travel agency

The history of our company started 10 years ago, when I was travelling to Poland, there I understood that I want to provide other people with an opportunity to travel. So when I came back I found people who have a common goal and we started doing first steps in creating travel agency.
At first year we encountered a lot of challenges and even we were near to go under. Besides, sometimes we thought about winding business up, especially when we lost a colossal project and our main investor refused to cooperate with us. But after spending real efforts our business has soared and, finally, it tips the balance. Now, we have a team spirit, mutual respect in the company and every person has an initiative and an enterprise, tries to foster productivity and examines details of future company outlook
As our travel agency is buoyant, we want to expand the number of the staff, so vacancies of manager and two travel agents are available now. We are waiting for qualified people, who can tackle a problem and sort any difficult situation out. Also, the employees should be responsible and wise, do everything ruthlessly and stick to work, moreover, never pass the buck or procrastinate doing something.
Furthermore, we have a suitable benefit package for every worker. It includes comprehensive healthcare provision, food allowance and company pension scheme. Also our agency provides the staff with additional bonuses and perks, holiday entitlement and subsidized canteen.
So if you are eager for working and you are ready to fit in our team, we’re waiting for you and guarantee you an employment.

Academy Day

Have you ever thought what makes you happy? I think, yes of course. Everyone of us surely had been in an extraordinary situation where in we best exhibited our best qualities. How we achieve happiness can be different for each one of us. Our passions, expectations, life experiences, and even our personalities all contribute to the level of contentment we experience in our lives. All days are not the same, some can be boring while some can be really exciting and leave an indelible impression on your mind, I am describing one of those days which bears in my mind. Life is a blessing thus every moment of your life has to be lived to the fullest. The most remarkable event in this month was an Academy Day (but about it later).
Incidentally, one year ago, I was a different person. I had a dream to study in Kiev, but life is an unpredictable thing. Now, I’m studying in Ostrog academy – in place, where I’ve never wanted to be. And with a great honour I can say that I’m very happy to be here. By the way, I found people who change my point of view, change myself and simply make my life better and happier. We celebrated together anniversary of our alma-mater.
Despite the fact that since the founding of the university has been more than four centuries, since the revival she was 20 years old. Having entered to the territory of academy, I felt an old powerful spirit of this place. In any case, everything was decorated in blue-yellow colours. In the afternoon there was a concert of pianist Etella Chupryk, then was a flashmob – held on the stadium. After official part at the academy park was a fair where was an utter chaos and a small concert, where all familiar faces showed their talents.
Finally, Academy Day is a remarkable event not only for Academy, but also for this small city. Thanks for organizers who put real efforts for a successful anniversary celebration. It was a classic example of a great highlight, which wasn’t ill-prepared or underworked. At the end of the day everyone was ecstatic and went home with a smile on a face.

Leisure time

                                                              Leisure time
Things are a lot easier now than they were fifty years ago, technology has given us more time to spend on leisure and to take an interest in different things.
Every individual whether a student or a businessman ideally finds some leisure time in a day. In most instances you spend your free time with your friends and families, which is good. You may also choose to play, read, or fulfill your other hobbies and interests. While you do all such activities, feel the excitement of you doing them in a productive manner. Remember, you’re only young once. So making the right use of your time can not only be interesting but also be very satisfying if you can be a little more creative to come out with great productive ideas. There are many ideas that you can implement to make your leisure time very productive and how to reduce stress. Here are a few ideas on how you can make your free time useful:
-Make some money. As now is 21 century – century of modern technologies and booming business, it has a collosal impact on the way we live, so is easy to earn a sufficient sum of money. The best productive way of utilizing your spare time is to use your hobbies and interests you are skilled at and earn an income.
-Clean up your belongings. If you’re devastated and feel that you can lose your temper, why not to do some cleaning? At any rate, do some cleaning work at your home, like reorganizing your books scattered in your study room or work space, cleaning your backyard garden, putting your clothes to clean, and many more. This not only helps you maintain cleanliness, but also lets you some good exercises for your body. Moreover, it can help you to wind down and to feel more ecstatic and jubilant.
-Plan your important goals: When you have free time and your mind is quite relaxed, try to suppress your feelings and set your milestones and goals. It does not have to be only your professional goals; you can also plan how you want to achieve your personal goals.
-Revisit your network. Free time is the best part of the day to relook at your network connections and visit them by sending them a welcoming message. It really helps when you have been thinking of buzzing someone, but have not been able to do so. Revisiting your network at your leisure times can bring wonders in your relationships.
-Broad your outlook. In any case, travelling is the most exciting way of spending free time. If you’re gutted of something, go for a picnic or visit a country of your dream.
-Stay healthy. Your regular work may keep your busy and uneasy all the time and you tend to ignore your health. So it is very important to calm down, so the best way to ease up your fatigue is to do some useful exercise for your body and mind whenever you get some free time. You can go for a walk or run through the jogging track at your locality, do some meditation exercises, or even do some yoga.
Finally, I hope everyone will choose the most appropriate step of spending leisure time productively. What's more, leisure time is one of the most important thing people can't live without. It is a big part of our life, and it actually shows the character and temper of person. Our hobbies and habits make our lives, filling it up with variety of feelings and emotions. Each person chooses his own way of spending time, either active of passive and in any case in should be a refreshment and a source of inspiration.

Body language

Have you ever thought about the way you walk and talk? What about the way you sit? Does it matter and what does it say about you? About your mood? About your attitude? Your personality or your culture?
What is this body language exactly?" Our body gestures, facial expressions, postures and even the distance we keep from others, when tied up together, create a rich layer of mostly subconscious communication called body language. We communicate and interact mainly through motions of our body and expressions with our face. In any case, without it we would be like robots - standing and blinking at each other while we speak.
It's your most natural and effective way of communicating in face to face interactions. As a matter of fact, the same gesture can indicate a number of different things depending on context. It is very important to have a little knowledge, what different kinds of gestures means. Bear in mind the proverb: "Better safe than sorry'' and during speaking with a person you'll know if he says the truth or deceives
Incidentally, after observing my groupmates I noticed how they behave in different situations and I made some generalizations about their gestures. For example, most of them always lean towards another person displaying an interest in each other. At any rate, it's a good way to keep an eye contact. I noticed than some goes red, when they are praised. When someone is confused, he always raises his eyebrow.  If a person is sitting with folded arms it may imply stuborness. Alternatively, folding arms can tell that person isn't interested in subject of speaking and do not want to participate in conversation.
Finally, a better understanding of human body language can be useful in our own communication and in understanding others. It is an excessive need to learn what every body sign means, because actions speak louder than words. It can also be a lot of fun to feel like you know what other people are thinking, when they're lying to you and how comfortable they are in a given situation.
